You have digestion problems. We will see a cardiologist? No, I think that you would see that the physician better trained to diagnose and treat your headache. This same reasoning is valid for people who seek psychotherapy, but perhaps a little more of the source of confusion for the layperson. In the murky waters of mental health, it is difficult to determine what professional to see. I hope that my insights from twenty plus years as a psychologist licensed make more clear right therapist research.

Psychologists: Longer doctorate (Dr. (Psy.D.) and training methods, knowledge and theories of psychology.) There are many specialties, among them, but not limited to, are clinical, counselling, educational, social, development, school and industry or organization. About 60% are in the areas of clinical expertise and counselling. These two fields of action are able to diagnose and treat the mental and personality disorders and adjustment problems. Generally three to six years of studies higher is necessary, and most American Psychological Association approved the mandate of programs an internship. To call oneself a psychologist from the written and oral exams by a State Board of Examiners of psychologists, with a period of supervision by a registered psychologist, is the law in all fifty States. Some States (Louisiana and New-Mexico) offer the possibility to psychologists to have the designation of "medical psychologists", which allows limited prescribing privileges. With additional education (master's psycho-pharmacology clinical), supervision by a physician and the maintenance of the strict guidelines, these psychologists may prescribe a drug.

Psychiatrists: They are doctors of Medicine (M.D.) specializing in psychiatry. After completing medical school, they continue for an additional four years of residency training in mental health studies. Additional training is obtained to specialize in areas of children and adolescents or geriatric. Psychiatrists prescribe drugs and monitor drugs for other vendors who do not have prescription privileges. They generally occur in hospitals and community mental health clinics, while maintaining a private practice. They deal with a wide range of mental health problems and can combine "talk therapy" with "therapy." They are often the doctor of primary treatment for serious mental health such as psychosis and substance abuse problems. If you choose to see a psychiatrist and "talk therapy" without medication, ask if counseling is provided, exclusion of the drug or combination of these two terms.

Social workers: most social workers offering advice have a M.S.W. (Social work master). Training requires two years of graduate studies and hundreds of hours of "in the field" (internship) supervised the training. They have their own licensing board and are found in private practice, schools, hospitals, mental health centres and facilities for chemical dependency. They work closely with psychologists and psychiatrists, assessments of family structures, often in consultation with the family home. You can find the social workers who go by the title, ' psychiatric social workers "or" clinical social workers. »

Psychoanalysts: Psychoanalysis refers to a specialized treatment obtained through accredited programs. Psychoanalysts can be doctors, as well as psychologists or social workers. They have certification in a form of psychotherapy associated with Sigmund Freud and his disciples. It is described as an approach to the unconscious and its relationship with current feelings, thought, and the behaviour of the probes. In most cases, the framework of the training is to undergo their own psychoanalysis. Care is given to anyone identifying themselves as a psychoanalyst. Psychoanalytic therapy is typically long duration and expensive. to this extent, managed care insurance companies cannot cover this form of treatment. You should check with your insurance provider.

Marriage & family, Advisor to pastoral and accredited professional advisors (c.p.a.); These titles represent persons who have at least a master's degree and a PhD. They obtain certification or licence to offer advice. They deal with the problems of adjustment in issues of marriage and the family and for people who require a supportive therapy. Pastoral advisors have a specific training to help individuals wishing their psychological support in a spiritual context.

Comments: Anyone you choose a therapist, they should have a State or national board certification. Most of the payment of insurance plans will be only recognize those with certification. Check if the professional provider works with your age group. For example, some therapists may not work with adolescents or elderly people.

Remember, anyone can call themselves a psychotherapist. Always check their credentials.
