European Commission approves stevia based sweetener

The European Commission said it gave approval of the natural sweetener for use in the food industry from December 2 on the recommendation of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).

'Clandestine' Stevia - all we could find some years ago in a health fair in Italy were little stevia plants - no sweetener.

Stevia rebaudiana, sometimes known as sweatleaf or sugarleaf, is part of the sunflower family. Its steviol glycoside extracts can be far sweeter than sugar, making it attractive for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar foods.

Stevia is widely used in Asia and South America.

Stevia is also a natural substitute for the controversial amino-acid and methanol based artificial sweetener aspartame that was forced onto the market by Donald Rumsfeld three decades ago. Perhaps now, with an alternative sweetener available, aspartame will finally be phased out.

USA: Don't Let the FDA Outlaw New Supplements!

The Life Extension Foundation says: "FDA just issued draconian proposals as to how it intends to regulate what it now calls “new dietary ingredients.” If implemented, some of the most effective nutrients you are taking will be removed from the market. This includes many fish oil formulas and natural plant extracts.

These oppressive rules are exactly what the 1994 law (DSHEA) sought to prevent. The FDA is using its authority in direct violation of congressional intent.

In order for these ingredients you are using today to return to the market, the FDA will require manufacturers to conduct outrageously expensive studies using absurdly high doses, in some situations multiplied by a “safety factor” up to 2,000 times the recommended dosage on a per product basis."

For years, polls have shown that about 90 percent of Americans support the labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMO). That's about as close to a consensus as you're going to get in this country. But amazingly, in this supposed bastion of freedom and democracy we're denied the fundamental right to know what's in our food -- a right that more than 50 other nations, including China and Russia, offer their citizens.

In the U.S., it's estimated that 60-70 percent of processed food may contain some GMO, but the food is not required to be labeled.

Study links Parkinson's disease to industrial solvent

Researchers found a six-fold increase in the risk of developing Parkinson's in individuals exposed in the workplace to trichloroethylene (TCE).

Although many uses for TCE have been banned around the world, the chemical is still used as a degreasing agent.

Parkinson's can result in limb tremors, slowed movement and speech impairment, but the exact cause of the disease is still unknown, and there is no cure.

Vultures dying at alarming rate

Vultures in South Asia were on the brink of extinction until Lindsay Oaks and Richard Watson, from The Peregrine Fund in the US, undertook observational and forensic studies to find out why the number of birds was falling so rapidly. They discovered the vultures were being poisoned by residues of an anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac) used in cattle and other livestock, whose carcasses they feed on.

I can't for the life of me imagine - but could that poison that kills the vultures be good for humans?

European Union sounds alarm over resistance to antibiotics

With some 25,000 Europeans dying each year from infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria, European health commissioner John Dalli said "we need to take swift and determined action if we do not want to lose antimicrobial medicines" for humans and animals.

Antimicrobials include antibiotics and can also be used as disinfectants and antiseptics.

I say it's time to prohibit the use of antibiotics in animal feed as a first step. Then, look into antimicrobials that microbes cannot develop resistance to, like oxygen (ozone) and silver. Two easy stop-gap measures. THEN do more research...

By Refusing to Ban Giving Healthy Livestock Daily Doses of Antibiotics, the FDA Puts Corporate Profits Above Consumers’ Health

In 1999, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) petitioned the FDA to stop the common practice of feeding perfectly healthy livestock antibiotics, not to cure disease, but merely to make them pack on weight more efficiently. Of particular concern to the organization were antibiotics used to treat disease in humans. That petition came 22 years after the FDA itself said that such “sub-therapeutic” use of penicillin- and tetracycline-containing products in animals should be halted because it had “not been shown safe.”

Last week, the FDA denied the petition, along with a similar one filed in 2005 by Environmental Defense.

Vitamins Decrease Lung Cancer Risk by 50%

A recent study of the effect of B vitamins on a large group of participants reported an inverse relationship between blood serum levels of vitamin B6, methionine, and folate and the risk of lung cancer. High serum levels of vitamin B6, methionine and folate were associated with a 50% or greater reduction in lung cancer risk. This exciting finding has not been widely reported in the media, but it confirms a growing body of evidence gathered over the last 40 years that B vitamins are important for preventing diseases such as cancer.

Vitamin D Proven Far Better Than Vaccines At Preventing Influenza Infections

A clinical trial led by Mitsuyoshi Urashima and conducted by the Division of Molecular Epidemiology in the the Department of Pediatrics at the Jikei University School of Medicine Minato-ku in Tokyo found that vitamin D was extremely effective at halting influenza infections in children.

The results are from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 334 children, half of which were given 1200 IUs per day of vitamin D3. In other words, this was a "rigorous" scientific study meeting the gold standard of scientific evidence.

New Drug Increases HDL, Decreases LDL, But What About Heart Disease?

A new study shows that so-called “good” cholesterol, HDL, is increased, and so-called “bad” cholesterol, LDL, is decreased by a new, as yet unreleased drug, evacetrapib. To be published this week in theJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the study demonstrates that HDL can be more than doubled compared with placebo and LDL decreases up to one-third.

That does, of course sound good. Having higher HDL levels and lower LDL levels are good for us, right?

Not necessarily. The error comes in mistaking markers of cardiovascular health with actual health. It is true that cholesterol levels are markers for cardiovascular health, but they are only part of the story. Most significantly in regard to this study, it has never been shown that artificially raising or lowering cholesterol benefits heart health or improves survival.

UK: Cervical cancer jab left girl, 13, in 'waking coma'

Lucy Hinks started suffering tiredness and flu-like symptoms after having the first two injections of the Cervarix anti-cancer vaccine last autumn.

FDA, Texas Medical Board Fight To Kill Cancer Cure

After a ten year court battle that ended in the Texas Supreme Court in 1996 that resulted in a "not guilty" verdict for Dr. Burzynski the Texas Medical Board, pressured by the FDA and the AMA, is back for another try.

The Texas Medical Board has scheduled a new hearing to revoke Burzynski's medical license. If it succeeds it will, very likely, result in Antineoplaston not gaining FDA approval. This, of course, will set personalized gene therapy back another decade. If it's not approved, you can bet that once Burzynski's patent-rights to Antineoplaston expire, Big Pharma will grab the patent rights and claim they have discovered a universal cancer cure—that only the elite and the favored can afford.

HIV/AIDS exemplifies scientific illiteracy

HIV was never shown to have caused AIDS.
Nevertheless, during three decades huge arrays of people and organizations have become engaged in a variety of activities based on the mistaken belief that HIV is an infectious immune-system-killing virus that caused and continues to cause AIDS.
That such a mistake could metastasize so massively seems incredible to the conventional wisdom, which regards it as impossible that “science” could go so wrong — after all, this is a scientific age in which all manner of technological marvels are accomplished all the time; and science itself can’t go wrong because it uses the scientific method and is self-correcting.

The conventional wisdom can hardly accept that it’s wrong about HIV/AIDS so long as it doesn’t realize that it’s wrong about science. It needs to be understood that
1. Science is not self-correcting.
2. Science is not done by “the scientific method”.
3. Scientists are not the appropriate experts to explain science to policymakers, the public, or the media. On the whole*, scientists know only the technical intricacies of what they do; they don’t understand the epistemology and sociology of science and they are ignorant of or mistaken about the history of science.

The science relating to HIV and to AIDS has never supported the mainstream assertions. Vested interests determined the course of events: careerism, political exigencies, empire-building in government agencies, financial benefits for companies and individuals. Once an activity commands billions of dollars of annual expenditure, mere scientific findings can exert little if any practical influence.

Europe Bans X-Ray Body Scanners Used at U.S. Airports

The European Union prohibited the use of X-ray body scanners in European airports, parting ways with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, which has deployed hundreds of the scanners as a way to screen millions of airline passengers for explosives hidden under clothing.

The European Commission, which enforces common policies of the EU's 27 member countries, adopted the rule “in order not to risk jeopardizing citizens’ health and safety.”

USA: TSA Puts Off Safety Study of X-ray Body Scanners

The head of the Transportation Security Administration has backed off a public commitment to conduct a new independent study of X-ray body scanners used at airport security lanes around the country.

Earlier this month, a ProPublica/PBS NewsHour investigation found that the TSA had glossed over research that the X-ray scanners could lead to a small number of cancer cases. The scanners emit low levels of ionizing radiation, which has been shown to damage DNA.

UK: Armed forces minister sorry for misleading MPs over depleted uranium

The armed forces minister has been forced to apologise over misleading statements he made regarding the legality and dangers of depleted uranium weapons.

Nick Harvey admitted that he had inadvertently misled MPs about a Ministry of Defence review that he said had concluded the weapons were permissible on humanitarian and environmental grounds under the Geneva conventions.

It subsequently emerged that the review had never happened, and Harvey has apologised for the error...

Depleted uranium weapons "permissible"? That would be like saying "kill them all" and getting away with it! No, they are not humanitarian weapons. Their use is a war crime.

America's Largest Database Confirms: No Deaths from Vitamins

The new 203-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published online here, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.

Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or dietary mineral supplement.

Three people died from non-supplement mineral poisoning: two from medical use of sodium and one from non-supplemental iron. On page 131, the AAPCC report specifically indicates that the iron fatality was not from a nutritional supplement.

USA: The FDA is closing in on supplements

More telling about the FDA’s strategy for more heavy-handed regulation is the statement that “If you look at the numbers of NDI submissions versus the number of supplements introduced to the market since 1994, it would appear there is a significant lag in compliance.” On its face, the marketplace has changed over the last seventeen years. But who is responsible for this 17-year lag in compliance?

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) required manufacturers to submit pre-market notification applications for supplements and new ingredients when there is a history of use or other evidence establishing that an ingredient is safe when used as directed. The FDA has 75 days to accept or reject the application. A non-decision by the FDA means that the Agency accepts the evidence and that the product has complied, is approved, and can be marketed to the consuming public. Alternatively, a formal petition for a review and FDA issuance of an order prescribing the conditions under which a new dietary ingredient can be used and reasonably be expected to be safe, with the FDA having to respond within 180 days, can be filed. Again, shouldn’t a non-decision on a petition be considered as final Agency approval? If the Agency does not issue a decision either way, or if it cannot find a decision that was issued over the previous seventeen years, has it been the industry or the FDA itself who has not been in compliance with DSHEA?

Apparently, the FDA believes that manufacturers and suppliers have not met the FDA’s own self-interpreted DSHEA burden of proof standard to show to the FDA that there is reasonable evidence that supplements and new ingredients in supplements are safe.

I wish the FDA were that efficient on pharmaceuticals...

Food and Nutraceutical Regulations - Global Snapshot

Every system of regulation has its pros and cons. The labelling of health-related foods should be based on scientific evidence, always bearing in mind harmonisation with global international standards. There should be a harmonisation of food regulations around the world. Economic growth and urbanisation are not enough evidence of the future growth of nutraceuticals, health demographic trends also support these growth forecasts. Consumers are deeply concerned about how their health care is managed, administered and priced. As health care cost has become high the consumers are frustrated with the expensive disease-treatment approach predominant in modern medicine; the consumer is now seeking alternative beneficial products like dietary supplement, functional food and nutraceuticals.

With innovative delivery mechanism to facilitate the use of nutraceuticals amongst its target groups, the world market is expected to witness a gradual shift toward natural ingredients.

The article discusses several of the major food regulatory systems and compares them. It becomes obvious that there are huge national differences in how to treat foods and in particular healthy foods. The question is: If those laws are to be somehow brought closer to each other, which would be the model to follow? I believe such a model (for ideal food legislation) needs to be worked out, to balance the current attempts - such as Codex Alimentarius - to put in the international food laws that are written by the large corporations.

Can Western guidelines govern Eastern herbal traditions?

Other supporters of herbal medicine worry that the rules are too demanding and could ban some therapies on which people depend. Adam Smith, science and communications officer for the Alliance for Natural Health International (ANHI) in Dorking, United Kingdom, a non-governmental campaign group promoting the use of herbal medicines and other approaches to healthcare, fears that patients will lose out on some Asian medicines because they have not been used in Europe for the requisite 15 years, even though they have been consumed in East Asia for considerably longer.

ANHI also detects a perceived bias in the THMPD towards products developed in the West, which often contain just one herb. Traditional Asian products contain mixtures of several herbs — making it difficult, time consuming and expensive to meet the directive's requirement to identify and quantify the active botanical ingredients or other biological agents in a herbal product. “These technical assessments require expensive methods,” says Smith. “The cost burden is a problem, particularly for small businesses,” he adds.

Middleton agrees that conducting scientific analyses are “tough” — even for products containing just one herb...

Evidence Based Medicine Is a Fraud - Here’s Why

Evidence Based Medicine, EBM, is the current calling card of conventional medical treatment. Just the sound of it carries the cachet of high quality medicine. Who wouldn’t want health treatments to be based on evidence?

The reality, though, is that EBM is fraudulent. It gives the impression of proof for efficacy of medical treatment, but is largely a smokescreen designed to sell medical products.

We should first take a hard look at the reality behind so many of the studies evoked to support EBM treatments. It’s becoming a well-known scandal that much of what passes for science in medical journals is at best useless, and at worst is devastatingly harmful—as demonstrated in the mass drugging of women going through the natural process of menopause.

American Association of Physicians and Surgeons Says Influenza Vaccine for Health Care Workers Should be Voluntary

Fewer than half of American Health Care Workers choose to be immunized annually against influenza. We believe that the professional judgment of these workers should be respected.

The proposed Colorado policy requires that facilities inform workers of the benefits and risks of influenza immunization. It does not specify what these are. What is the purpose of this information if workers are not allowed to make a decision based upon it? What provisions are made for indemnifying workers who experience an adverse effect, some of which can lead to death, hospitalization, or long-term disability?

In the age of “evidence-based medicine,” it is shocking that there is so little evidence that the influenza vaccination program is effective. Indeed, there is evidence that it may be ineffective (http://www.jpands.org/vol11no3/geier.pdf). Safety data are reported in very few studies: only five randomized studies with 2,963 observations extending only one week after the injection. In fact, the coordinator of the vaccines section of the Cochrane Collaboration called for an urgent reevaluation of the UK’s influenza vaccination program (Jefferson T, Influenza vaccination: policy versus evidence. BMJ 2006;333:912-915). In particular, the safety of many repeated similar vaccinations is not addressed. Allergic, anaphylactic, hyperimmune, and dysimmune reactions are possible.

The parents of a schoolboy who was struck down with narcolepsy after receiving a flu vaccine, said the Government should have carried out more tests before issuing the drug.

Processed Meats Declared Too Dangerous for Human Consumption

The World Cancer Research Fund has just completed a detailed review of more than 7,000 clinical studies covering links between diet and cancer. Its conclusion is rocking the health world with startling bluntness: Processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption. Consumers should stop buying and eating all processed meat products for the rest of their lives.

Processed meats include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and virtually all red meat used in frozen prepared meals. They are usually manufactured with a carcinogenic ingredient known as sodium nitrite. This is used as a color fixer by meat companies to turn packaged meats a bright red color so they look fresh. Unfortunately, sodium nitrite also results in the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines in the human body. And this leads to a sharp increase in cancer risk for those who eat them.

Rare gene variant implicates vitamin D in cause of multiple sclerosis

A rare genetic variant that appears to be directly and causally linked to multiple sclerosis (MS) has been identified by Oxford University researchers.

The researchers then looked for the rare gene variant in over 3,000 families of unaffected parents with a child with MS. They found 35 parents who carried one copy of this variant along with one normal copy. In every one of these 35 cases, the child with MS had inherited the mutated version of the gene.

The likelihood of this gene’s transmission being unconnected to the MS is billions to one against, the researchers say.

The very strong implication is that in these particular cases of MS, low vitamin D levels are directly connected to the disease.

The researchers believe there are wider implications of this finding. They suggest that low levels of vitamin D are likely to play a role in MS more generally.

Is there an important advantage in actually getting the flu?

The paper suggests that people with preexisting antibodies to different H1N1 strains had more immunity to swine flu H1N1 than those without. Getting a flu infection (whether or not you actually get sick... since the majority of people with influenza infections show few if any symptoms) leaves you with long-lived antibodies, and many more of them, than someone has who got vaccine. And they protect against similar strains, which flu vaccine usually fails to do.

This might explain the data from Canada and Hong Kong (that I have blogged about several times) which showed that receiving flu vaccine in 2008 led to almost double the likelihood of getting sick from swine flu in 2009. In other words, the unvaccinated from the previous flu season fended off swine flu much better than the previous season's vaccinated people did.

A group of scientists is pushing to publish research about how they created a man-made flu virus that could potentially wipe out civilisation.

Australian journalist wins prestigious award for exposing flu vaccine scandal

Natasha Bita, a journalist for The Australian has just won a Walkley Award (the Australian equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize) for an in-depth article series on the CSL Afluria flu vaccine, a shot that caused convulsions in one percent of Australian infants who received it.

To put this vaccine scandal in perspective, the CDC states that ‘seizures can occur after vaccination,’ 33% of infants who have a first seizure will have more seizures and 10% of infants who have one seizure can develop epilepsy. According to the Merck Manual (the largest-selling medical textbook), seizures are a symptom of encephalitis, which the Merck Manual defines as a vaccine adverse reaction. Vaccine-induced encephalitis can leave a spectrum of permanent brain damage in its wake – post-encephalitic syndrome (aka epilepsy and autism). In other words, kids that have convulsions from Afluria can have lifelong neurological disabilities.

Incredibly, the defective CSL flu vaccine Afluria is still on the market in the US: FDA-approved and CDC-recommended.

Micronutrient Profiles in HIV-1-Infected Heterosexual Adults

It is interesting to see how important micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are in Aids patients, especially magnesium ...

"There is compelling evidence that micronutrients can profoundly affect immunity. We surveyed vitamin supplement use and circulating concentrations of 22 nutrients and glutathione in 64 HIV-1 seropositive men and women and 33 seronegative controls participating in a study of heterosexual HIV-1 transmission. We assayed antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E; total carotenes), vitamins B6 and B12, folate, thiamin, niacin, biotin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, free and total choline and carnitine, biopterin, inositol, copper, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. HIV-infected patients had lower mean circulating concentrations of magnesium, total carotenes, total choline, and glutathione, and higher concentrations of niacin than controls. Fifty-nine percent of HIV + patients had low concentrations of magnesium, compared with 9% of controls."

So What Does it Mean that Studies Reveal that Moderate Drinkers Are Healthier than Teetotalers ?

We all know that drinking too much can be bad for us; but did you know that drinking too little could be hazardous?

I don't want to go to rehab, but a raft of recent studies show that moderate alcohol consumption lowers our risks for many dire conditions including heart disease, stroke, gallstones, diabetes and dementia. Some studies even suggest that the answer to pesky menopause symptoms comes in six-packs and goes great with pretzels.

The keyword here is "moderate." Some studies define this as one drink per week; others as up to four drinks per day. This haziness notwithstanding, these studies show that heavy drinkers are far more likely than moderate drinkers to die from certain diseases.

But so are people who don't drink at all.

It's a bell curve. But while one half of the bell is well, duh, the other half -- the half involving abstinence -- is pretty shocking. In study after study, abstainers get sick and die sooner and in larger numbers than moderate drinkers.

New Zealand: Food As Commodity, Not Nourishment

With the implementation of Food Bill 160-2, massive new powers, including powers of arrest, will be given to “food safety officers”, who can be members of the private sector. Even marae, communal and sacred places, will be subject to their actions. Warrants will not be required so there will be no need for evidence of a crime, meaning anyone could be raided at any time…and there will be no recourse, no matter how egregious their acts.

The purpose of the bill—as stated by New Zealand Food Safety Authority—is to bring New Zealand into line with Codex Alimentarius provisions.

Codex still believes saturated fats cause heart attacks

Adhering to the outdated views first espoused by the makers of Crisco in 1911, when they wanted to shove butter and lard off grocery-store shelves in favor of their new-fangled invention, Crisco (a shortened name form for “Crystallized Cottonseed Oil”), most Codex delegates still think that saturated fats are the cause of heart attacks. That is why the Committee wanted to establish an Nutrient Reference Vaue of no more than 10 percent of daily energy intake for this fat and push consumers towards a higher intake of the “safe” polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Such nonsense is often what passes for “science” at Codex these days, with no correlation to current research that anyone could pull off of Pub-Med within two minutes. The delegation of Malaysia, though, cannot be tarred with this tattered brush. Malaysia clearly and unequivocally stated its views that saturated fats had a role in the diet and were not correlated with the risk of coronary heart disease. The International Dairy Federation supported this view and provided its own defense of saturated fats in a healthy diet.

Australian Medical Association urges watch on vaccines

DOCTORS demanded more monitoring of vaccine side-effects yesterday after the federal government announced penalties for families who fail to immunise their children.

Australian Medical Association president Steve Hambleton said the government must introduce "active surveillance" to monitor side effects instead of relying on doctors and patients to report problems through "passive surveillance".

USA: More Parents Are Opting Out of Vaccines

A study of exemption rates by the Associated Press finds that more and more parents are skipping required vaccines for their children, often out of fear that shots do more harm than good. More than half of all states have seen an increase in the number of exemptions and in eight states, mostly in the Northwest and Midwest, the percentage of kids not getting the full recommendation of shots is over 5 percent.

Doctors cite many reasons for the rise in requested exemptions, one of which is that it is simply easier than it used to be to opt out. In many places, parents who wish to enroll their kids in kindergarten without the required shots simply need to check a box on a form (which can be easier than taking their kids to the doctor.) Other cite religious reasons or the sheer volume of shots, which has increased with the development of new vaccines, like the one for chickenpox.

What’s more, doctors are prescribing foster children drugs at doses beyond what the Food and Drug Administration has approved, sometimes in potentially dangerous combinations, according to a new report by the federal Government Accountability Office.

“It’s just almost beyond comprehension,” said Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., who asked for the GAO investigation. “We want the doctors and nurses that are prescribing these medicines to look at their behavior and think and ask this question. Are we doing something wrong here?”

In Florida, regulators have been grappling with that question since a 7-year-old boy, Gabriel Myers, killed himself in 2009 after being prescribed a powerful mix of psychotropic medication.

Big Pharma Paying Out Huge Fraud Settlements

The cost of doing business for big pharma is rising – dramatically. And it’s not because of research and development of new blockbusters to cure cancer, alleviate pain or help people get a good night’s sleep.

Merck on Tuesday said it will pay $950 million to settle criminal and civil allegations brought by the U.S. Department of Justice related to Merck’s marketing of Vioxx, a widely-used painkiller that was pulled from the shelves in 2004 after a study revealed the drug increased the risk of heart attacks. To make a very long story short, prosecutors believed Merck knew the drug posed a threat but lied about the potential risks in its marketing and sold it anyway. Why not? The drug raked in $2.5 billion in revenue in 2003.

The astounding thing about the Merck settlement is that it’s not even the largest of its kind this month. Three weeks ago, British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline, which, like Merck, has extensive operations in the U.S., reached a $3 billion settlement related to sprawling allegations tied to that company’s marketing of its diabetes drug Avandia.
The GlaxoSmithKline deal broke a record, topping a $2.3 billion settlement reached by Pfizer in September of 2009. And Pfizer’s deal came hard on the heels of a $1.4 billion settlement reached by Eli Lilly in January of 2009.

So, for those keeping score, Merck’s payout ranks fourth on the all-time list of massive settlements stemming from allegations of fraudulent marketing tactics by giant pharmaceutical companies.

The (health) movement has gone mainstream because people have a choice. They can think for themselves. They can act on their thoughts. There is that freedom.

Of course, we have health dictators in government who know what they want. And choice isn’t it. They want you to bow down and grovel and obey. It’s that simple. They’re criminals.

The FDA, for example, is a criminal agency. It has institutionalized its crimes. Made those crimes part of government.

The FDA can look the other way while the medical system kills 225,000 people a year, 106,000 from the effects of approved and certified drugs. (Starfield, July 26, 2000, JAMA, “Is US health really the best in the world?”)

The FDA can also, at the same time, try to decimate the nutritional-supplement industry, whose products kill virtually no one every year.

Is the USA setting itself up to squeeze out dietary supplements like in Europe?

Natural healthcare, most especially herbal medicine, is under the cosh in Europe at the moment. Anyone keeping an eye on our website for any length of time knows how a slew of inappropriate legislation, masterminded by large companies in cahoots with the European Commission and powerful member state governments, is slowly engulfing many forms of natural medicine. The losers in this process are the smaller players who have long been at the forefront of providing the most therapeutically relevant natural products. They simply get squeezed out, less so by direct bans, but more as a result of regulatory burdens they simply can’t negotiate through lack of cash.

But the FDA has been getting ever closer to the European authorities. They have worked together as the two most powerful entities in the Codex Alimentarius for many years...

Time to ‘Occupy the FDA’?

Regulators worldwide are working increasingly closely together, so it’s no surprise that we can expect increasing convergence in the different regulatory systems. This is what globalisation is about, and it’s all about making the environment as cosy as possible for the biggest corporate players out there. Big Pharma, Big Food and Big Bitech are among the masterminds of this system, and they don’t like to see a bunch of us out there looking after our own health using natural substances, failing to get ill, not seeing doctors, not taking drugs and being vaccinated, growing our own organic food — basically operating outside the system they created.

USA: House Bill Would Spare Thousands of Dietary Supplements From Being Removed

Last July, the FDA stunned supplement manufacturers with its proposed Guidance that would require all dietary ingredients introduced into the marketplace since 1994 to undergo drug-like safety testing prior to marketing. The tests could cost millions of dollars per each new ingredient, and that includes each variation on that ingredient too. These requirements would not make supplements any safer than they are today and would require supplement makers to lay aside 20 years of profits to conduct the tests. To make matters worse, tens of thousands of workers could lose their jobs as the supplement industry would be forced to remove products from store shelves.

An under-the-radar campaign has been launched in the UK, calling itself ‘The Safer Herbal Medicine Campaign’ (SHMC). It aims to pressure the UK medicines regulator to remove botanical food supplements from the market

Its concerns mirror those of Professor Elizabeth Williamson, whose letter we leaked previously, and Dr Dick Middleton of Schwabe Pharma (a major pharmaceutical producer of standardized herbal extracts). Dr Middleton is instrumental to the SHMC, and circumstantial evidence indicates that Prof Williamson may have been co-opted into the campaign.

The key goal of the SHMC would appear to be to force the competitors of Schwabe and, perhaps those of other herbal license holders, from the market, while professing concern for public safety...

EU draft health claims list would infringe commercial free speech, says health alliance

ANH-International argues that it is an overly stringent and inappropriate evaluation methodology used by EFSA that is responsible for this 92% rejection rate. It also argues that to pass the list into law would be legally disproportionate, especially since evaluations of other claims, notably for botanical substances and probiotics, have yet to be completed.

Irish Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Marian Harkin stated: “We all have a problem with cowboys in the food industry who make outlandish claims that are not supported by science – and this is why I, and the majority of other MEPs, supported the Regulation when we voted for it in 2006.”

“But I’m now very concerned about just how few claims have gone through. For many consumers trying to ensure their families eat as healthily as possible, it would be very confusing if these were the only ones allowed. They’ll see the same few claims repeated over and over again on some foods, but so many others will be claim free.”

Ms Harkin added: “It’s difficult to accept that among the thousands of known beneficial food ingredients, nutritional science supports the use of only 70!”

Two Vitamin C Tablets Every Day Could Save 200,000 Lives Every Year

New research has reported that risk of heart failure decreases with increasing blood levels of vitamin C [1]. Persons with the lowest plasma levels of ascorbate had the highest risk of heart failure, and persons with the highest levels of vitamin C had the lowest risk of heart failure.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) there are about 600,000 deaths from heart disease each year. [2] This is an enormous number. The definition of heart failure used by the study authors was on the basis of drugs prescribed, which would include all forms of heart disease that cause death. This agrees well with the CDC definition.

Specifically, the study found that each 20 micromole/liter (µmol/L) increase in plasma vitamin C was associated with a 9% reduction in death from heart failure. That works out to 54,000 fewer deaths from heart failure for each increase in 20 µmol/L plasma vitamin C. If everyone took high enough doses of vitamin C to reach the highest quartile (80 µmol/L), that would work out to approximately 216,000 fewer deaths per year. Just from taking vitamin C.

Vitamin D Cuts Flu By Half: Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Randomized Trial

Vitamin D is a highly effective way to avoid influenza. A study documents that children taking low doses of Vitamin D3 are 42% less likely to contract influenza.

Performed by Mitsuyoshi Urashima and colleagues from the Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo, the study was randomized, double blinded, and placebo-controlled. 430 children aged 6-15 were enrolled and followed between December 2008 and March 2009. Half were given Vitamin D3 and the other half received a placebo. The dose was 1,200 IUs a day. 334 of the children completed the study.

EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration

EU officials concluded that, following a three-year investigation, there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact.

Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.

Last night, critics claimed the EU was at odds with both science and common sense. Conservative MEP Roger Helmer said: “This is stupidity writ large.

“The euro is burning, the EU is falling apart and yet here they are: highly-paid, highly-pensioned officials worrying about the obvious qualities of water and trying to deny us the right to say what is patently true.

Common infections will be 'untreatable' if antibiotic misuse continues

The world is being pushed towards the unthinkable scenario of untreatable infections, warns a new paper published in the medical journal Lancet, blaming a decline in new drug discoveries and the rising numbers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

In the EU alone, 25,000 patients die every year from infections caused by drug resistant bacteria.

As well as investment into new antibiotics, there are growing calls for a crackdown on the misuse of existing antibiotics.

The biggest problem is seen as unnecessary use in human medicine but, the excessive use of antibiotics in intensive farming units, particularly pig and poultry farms, is seen as a growing threat.

Scientists say antimicrobial resistance may also be passing between animals and humans, making the need to cut unnecessary use in farming even more urgent. The World Health Organisation says drug use in farm animals plays a 'significant role' in spreading antibiotic-resistant salmonella and campylobacter infections in humans.

Plasmas sterilize water cheaply

Researchers have known plasmas will kill bacteria in water. Now, a new experiment shows that water treated with plasma killed all the E. coli bacteria that were added to it within a few hours of treatment and still killed 99.9 percent of the bacteria added after it sat for a week.

Deadly polio vaccines

Pakistan - a leaked report prepared by the Prime Minister's Inspection Commission shockingly reveals that polio vaccines funded by a Swiss NGO are allegedly causing deaths and disabilities in children.

According to the investigative report, the NGO, Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation (GAVI), has been found responsible for funding fatal polio vaccines in not only Pakistan but also India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Japan.

Merck Pleads Guilty to Criminal Charge and Pays $950 Million Fine for Vioxx

According to OSHA head David Michael’s excellent book Doubt is Their Product, Merck knew from their pre-release clinical studies that Vioxx had four times the risk of heart attack as the placebo they used (naproxen). They preposterously inverted that finding and spun it around to state that the placebo naproxen reduced heart attack risk by 80%. According to Michaels’ book, ‘scientists at the FDA estimate that Vioxx caused between 88,000 and 139,000 heart attacks, probably 30%-40% of them fatal.’

The midpoint of that range is 40,000. So Merck (with foreknowledge) deliberately killed about 40,000 people that were simply taking a pain reliever drug (most weren’t heart patients). That is almost as many deaths as US combat casualties in the Vietnam war. That must make Merck the biggest corporate mass-murderer in history.

Like Candy? Foster Kids Get More Antipsychotics

In the latest reason for concern about prescribing antipsychotics for children, a study finds that foster kids are being prescribed combinations of antipsychotics just as frequently as some of the most mentally disabled youngsters on Medicaid. And the findings underscore a growing trend to prescribe these meds, which are approved only for schizophrenia and bipolard disorder, for any psychiatric issue.

Antipsychotics Linked to Childhood Diabetes

Diabetes may be substantially more likely for children taking second-generation atypical antipsychotics, according to findings from a recent study, which included a number of caveats.

Incidence of diabetes appeared to be more than four times higher among children on a second-generation antipsychotic than in those not using psychotropic medications, Susan E. Andrade, ScD, of the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, and colleagues found.

Merck—Too Big to Prosecute?

There is a surprising reason why the [US] government won’t go after drug companies for serious crimes.

It is because government programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration would then be barred from doing business with them!

In 1999 the FDA approved Vioxx, a drug created by Merck and Co. to treat arthritis. Vioxx was pulled off the market in 2004 because evidence showed it greatly increased the risk of heart attack in the 25 million Americans who had taken the drug. Some 50,000 patients sued, and 27,000 of the plaintiffs received $4.85 billion in settlement of their claims.

Last week the Department of Justice announced that Merck has agreed to pay a $321 million criminal fine and plead guilty to one misdemeanor count of illegally introducing a drug into interstate commerce. Merck also is paying $426 million to the federal government and $202 million to state Medicaid agencies. Those payments will settle civil claims that its marketing caused doctors to prescribe and bill the government for Vioxx they otherwise would not have prescribed.

Please note that these settlements are for rather minor infractions—not for deliberately concealing the danger of a killing drug from patients, the medical community, and their investors. Despite the serious consequences of Merck’s actions, the government won’t prosecute them for any serious charges—because, if they did and won, it would mean they would have to stop doing business with Merck in the future! Federal law makes it illegal for Medicare and Medicaid to do business with “an excluded or debarred entity resulting from serious criminal charges.”

Well with banks too big to fail and pharmaceutical companies too big to prosecute, no wonder small is beautiful!

European Parliament Faces Major Test Over EU Health Claims

A European Commission standing committee agreed to pass a proposal for a regulation to the European Parliament that will, if approved, authorise European food suppliers to use 224 health claims linked to just 70 foods and ingredients, EU-wide. Additionally, around 2,500 other claims that did not receive positive opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), will be banned. The European Parliament will now have 90 days to scrutinise the proposal before making its decision.

Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl), a non-governmental organisation campaigning for the right to natural health and consumer freedom of choice, believes that the European Parliament should reject the European Commission’s proposal in its present form.

Explaining ANH-Intl’s position, Dr Robert Verkerk, its executive and scientific director, said, “Ensuring consumers are not given false and misleading claims, the key objective of the regulation, is laudable. But removing the majority of claims, some 92% of those evaluated, on the basis of scientific methods that are derived from a pharmaceutical rather than nutritional science model is simply madness.”

Gut Flora, Intestinal Mucosa, Antibiotics and AIDS - Are Antibiotics killing the immune system?

Evidence-Based Medicine: Neither Evidence nor Good Medicine

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is the practice of treating individual patients based on the outcomes of huge medical trials. It is, currently the self-proclaimed gold standard for medical decision-making, and yet it is increasingly unpopular with clinicians. Their reservations reflect an intuitive understanding that something is wrong with its methodology. They are right to think this, for EBM breaks the laws of so many disciplines that it should not even be considered scientific. Indeed, from the viewpoint of a rational patient, the whole edifice is crumbling.

The assumption that EBM is good science is unsound from the start. Decision science and cybernetics (the science of communication and control) highlight the disturbing consequences. EBM fosters marginally effective treatments, based on population averages rather than individual need. Its mega-trials are incapable of finding the causes of disease, even for the most diligent medical researchers, yet they swallow up research funds. Worse, EBM cannot avoid exposing patients to health risks.

Book Review: The World According To Monsanto

Like the Fluoride Deception, The World According to Monsanto is deeply and viscerally disturbing, while if anything the potential for harm being discussed is far greater than that even from water fluoridation.

There is almost nothing at all that has been peer-reviewed published on the topic and that is the result of very specific regulatory decisions taken concerning GM foods. I will say again, there are hardly a handful of articles in the peer-reviewed literature looking at the health effects of any given GM food, let alone the incredibly complex issue in general.

As noted in the book, this is due to a curious decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulators to declare a-priori, and over the objection of FDA scientists, that GM foods are “substantially equivalent” to non genetically modified foods and thus can be released without any oversight, studies or regulation. The terrible absurdity of this position (and why there are no studies on the health effects of these new organisms) takes a moment to sink in and requires departure from the book review for a brief moment.

Vaccination and Renal Patients: A critical examination of assumed safety and effectiveness

Vaccines are designed to create a state of inflammation, and raise LDL and CRP levels. Why then would we give a vaccine to a patient who already has an inflammatory kidney or heart event? Why wouldn’t it be obvious that vaccination can make these conditions worse? With an understanding of the above and the absence of placebo-controlled, long-term follow up studies, we cannot reassure people that vaccines will not create or exacerbate an autoimmune disease. Vaccine-induced acute autoimmune reactions including Guillain-Barre syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, vasculitis and nephritis are well-described in the medical literature and often listed on vaccine package inserts. If patients were followed longer and if doctors took a more accurate vaccine administration history (of the vaccines given before the new medical problems occur), more vaccine-associated damage would become obvious.

Australia: HPV Vaccine Victim Sues Merck

Naomi Snell, a 28-year-old woman in Melbourne, Australia, is leading a class-action civil lawsuit against drug maker Merck after suffering autoimmune and neurological complications following injections with the HPV vaccine, Gardasil.

After receiving the first of three doses of the vaccine, Naomi suffered convulsions, severe back and neck pain, and lost her ability to walk.

New Study Verifies Mercury In Flu Shots Is Toxic

The toxic effects of the mercury, also known in vaccines as Thimerosal, have once again been confirmed, this time by researchers from the University of Brazil. Marking the sixth major study in recent months to condemn the use of mercury in medicine, the new study reveals that mercury causes serious brain damage, and is linked to autism and other developmental diseases in children and Alzheimer’s disease in adults.

Dr. Jose Dorea and his colleagues conducted an extensive, peer-reviewed analysis of various studies and available information in major databases that address the effects of low-dose Thimerosal, or ethylmercury, on neural tissue and behavior. They found conclusively that Thimerosal accumulates in brain tissue, negatively affects brain development, and harms brain cells.

“Mercury is known to cause serious harm, especially to fetuses and children because of their smaller size,” said Lisa Sykes, president of the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs (CoMeD), a non-profit group dedicated to removing mercury from medicine. “Why remove Thimerosal from pediatric vaccines only to inject it into pregnant women and children with recommended flu shots?

Warning: High Frequency

It’s January 1990, during the pioneer build-out of mobile phone service. A cell tower goes up 800 feet from the house of Alison Rall, in Mansfield, Ohio, where she and her husband run a 160-acre dairy farm. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared the overdoses from opioid drugs like OxyContin an "epidemic." And a growing group of experts doubts that they work for long-term pain.

But the pills continue to have an influential champion in the American Pain Foundation, which describes itself as the nation's largest advocacy group for pain patients. Its message: The risk of addiction is overblown, and the drugs are underused.

What the nonprofit doesn't highlight is the money behind that message.

The foundation collected nearly 90 percent of its $5 million funding last year from the drug and medical-device industry -- and closely mirrors its positions, an examination by ProPublica found.

The disturbing reason why a growing number of parents are being falsely accused of shaking their babies to death

After the case, the Wrays’ lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said: ‘These parents have been through hell. They can now grieve for the son they loved and cherished.’

Yet theirs is a case which has profound implications for all families. For it serves to highlight a growing medical problem — one which is not only leading to false allegations of abuse against innocent parents, but which is endangering the health of children right across Britain.

As Jenny Wiltshire said: ‘The real criminality here is that if the money spent on bringing this case had been used to tell all breastfeeding mothers to take vitamin D supplements, Jayden’s death wouldn’t have occurred.

Science Journal Exposes Gardasil and HPV Vaccinations as Unproven, Unjustified and Lacking Evidence

A recent publication in the Annals of Medicine has exposed the fraudulent nature of Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines such as Gardasil and Cervarix. Key messages the researchers report include a lack of evidence for any HPV vaccines in preventing cervical cancer and lack of evaluation of health risks.

In other words, contrary to conventional drug treatments aimed at targeted existing diseases, in a supposed preventative vaccination, a compromise in efficacy for the benefit of safety should not be seen as an unreasonable expectation. Furthermore, physicians are ethically obliged to provide an accurate explanation of vaccine risks and benefits to their patients and, where applicable, a description of alternative courses of treatment. This in turn enables patients to make a fully informed decision with regard to vaccination.

The problem is, vaccinations such as HPV are not preventative, they do compromise safety and physicians will never provide accurate explanations of vaccine risks and benefits because they do not know themselves. Physicians can only rely on the information from vaccine manufacturers and since long-term pharmacokinetic effects which study the bodily absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of vaccines and their ingredients are never examined or analyzed, a Physician can never fully inform of patient of ANY benefits or risks.

"Mitochondrial Autism" is Real; Vaccine Triggers Cannot Be Ruled Out

The December 1st issue of Time Magazine carries a special section on "The Year in Medicine," which mentions the case of Hannah Poling, the young girl with autism who received compensation from the federal vaccine injury program.

Like many news accounts back then, Time has called the case "rare," because it involved an underlying dysfunction of Hannah's mitochondria, the little powerhouses within each cell that produce energy.

The widespread misconception that Hannah's case was "unique," and without any bearing on other autism cases, was promulgated by opinion leaders such as CDC Director Julie Gerberding and the newly rich vaccine inventor Dr. Paul Offit, (who told Newsweek that his share of the royalties from the vaccine was "like winning the lottery.")

But on Wednesday, a new chart-review study was published showing that "mitochondrial autism" is not rare at all.

"These and prior data suggest a disturbance of mitochondrial energy production as an underlying pathophysiological mechanism in a subset of individuals with autism," wrote the authors of the study, "Mitochondrial Disease in Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients: A Cohort Analysis."

The CDC Has Known All Along How Dangerous Vaccines Are - And Has Covered It Up... (Part Five)

In this fifth article of this series I will explain where this is all going, what is really happening here - the use of the Judiciary branch of the US Government to rein in the activities of an out-of-control federal agency - the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - a Division of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

And something more. Much more. It is time for criminal indictment.

The search for documents, in this court case, is uncovering a pattern of criminal activity. Whoever is running, making the decisions to withhold documents at CDC, knows where all this is going. I am certain that within the walls of the CDC, right this minute, certain CDC employees - past and present, contractors, and consultants, etc. are quietly being told to personally "lawyer-up," and familiarize themselves on how to make claim to the Fifth Amendment provisions of the US Constitution (taking the Fifth).

Is there really criminal activity here?

You bet there is. Major criminal activity. The people involved in this denial of the effects of Thimerosal in vaccines, and the cover up of the real situation, are some of, perhaps, the worst criminals in the history of mankind. Just look at the numbers of children damaged, and the cost to society - worldwide. This is far worse than anything the NAZIs, or Stalin, did. This overshadows any genocide effort in the history of mankind.

This isn't about simple fraud, the marketing of vaccines, or some comparison of preservatives in vaccines. This is about major damage to children. And it is all coming out.

GMOs and why you should never use Canola oil

Olive oil comes from olives. Sesame seed oil comes from sesame seeds.

But what is a canola? Canola is actually a made-up word for a genetically modified product.

Canola stands for “Canadian oil low acid.” It’s (sadly) a Canadian invention and subsidized by the government. The subsidies make it very cheap to use, so almost all processed or packaged foods contain canola oil.

The claim is that canola is safe to use because through modification it is no longer rapeseed but “canola.” Except… canola is just genetically modified rapeseed. It has been marketed as a wonder oil that is low in saturated fats with a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. It is recognized by the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association based on the belief that the absence of saturated fats alone makes it healthy.

Aspartame used in Diet Coke linked to cancer and premature births

One study linked aspartame with cancer, while another study of 60,000 pregnant women found that the amount of aspartame consumed by mothers-to-be could potentially increase the danger of premature birth.

However, health watchdogs including the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have so far said it does not pose a risk to health.

Now EU officials have asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to accelerate the scheduling of a safety review planned for 2020, following requests by a number of MEPs.

False Claims, Off-Label Prescribing & Doctors

Over the past fiscal year, the US Justice Department recovered nearly $2.2 billion under the False Claims Act against the pharmaceutical industry for fraud against federal healthcare programs, notably Medicaid and Medicare. In doing so, the feds say drugmakers relied on various forms of illegal promotion or pricing to bolster prescriptions and profits.

To establish marketing fraud, the feds typically examine a sequence of events that involves a drugmaker inducing a doctor to prescribe a drug on an off-label basis. Doctors are free to do so, of course, but drugmakers are not supposed to promote their meds for used not approved by the FDA. Meanwhile, a prescription will later get filled by a pharmacy, ultimately, resulting in a false claim.

Rarely, though, do the feds ever consider pursuing a False Claims Act against physicians. The line of reasoning is simply that individual doctors - or pharmacists, for that matter - are generally not worth the effort in terms of needed resources and potential returns. But one attorney has been waging a court battle in hopes of reducing off-label prescriptions of antipsychotics to children who are on Medicaid.

The issue has been contentious for several years, especially before several drugmakers won FDA approval to market their antipsychotics to increasingly younger children. There is still controversy. A recent US Government Accountability Office report found that foster children - including some as young as one year old - are inappropriately prescribed psychotropics.

Brain Tumor Pandemic—DNA Impacts from Mobile Phones Implicated in New Analysis

An important new analysis, The Potential Impact of Mobile Phone Use on Trends in Brain and CNS Tumors, was published today in the journal Neurology & Neurophysiology. It can be downloaded without cost at http://www.omicsonline.org/2155-9562/2155-9562-S5-003.pdf. The paper is in a Special Issue of the journal titled “Brain Tumor.”

The study raises very serious concerns about the potential for a large increase in brain cancer incidence, resulting from widespread mobile phone use. The steep increase in brain cancer will begin in approximately 15 years according to the projections.
